Intervista: PARADOX (Italian & English version)

Oggi con noi una leggenda dello speed-thrash metal teutonico: i Paradox! Autori qualche mese fa del fenomenale "Riot Squad", vergognosamente passato in sordina a causa della solita tendenza da parte dei metal-fan di sostenere nomi che ormai non hanno più nulla da dire, noi di Metal Of Death invece rendiamo, nel nostro piccolo, omaggio a una band e soprattutto al suo mastermind Charly Steinhauer, che meriterebbe attenzione estrema da tutti gli amanti del metal in genere. Nelle sue parole molti aneddoti interessanti e la sua rinascita dopo un lungo periodo nel quale ha rischiato di lasciare questo mondo...A voi. 

1) Ciao Charly, per me è un onore averti sulla nostra webzine! Cominciamo parlando del vostro ultimo album, "Riot Squad”. Nella mia recensione ho dato un voto molto alto (85/100), e credo sia il disco thrash in assoluto migliore uscito nel 2009, ma a mio avviso da molti anni a questa parte. Credi che esagero se lo definisco come il vostro miglior disco di sempre?

(Charly Steinhauer) Innanzitutto grazie per tutti questi complimenti. Siamo molto contenti del nostro nuovo album, “Riot Squad”. Insieme ad “Heresy” e “Collision Course” è il mio preferito, la produzione è più diretta e le canzoni spaccano il culo. Quindi sono d’accordo con te! Siamo sulla strada giusta, nessun fan dei Paradox rimarrà deluso.

2) So che dopo “Collision Course” (2000), i Paradox si sono dovuti fermare per molti anni prima di tornare con “Electrify” (2008). Vuoi parlarci dei motivi di questa lunga pausa? So che purtroppo hai dovuto combattere con diversi problemi di salute e altri a livello personale. Dico bene?

Sì, hai ragione! Ho avuto molti drammi personali in quel periodo. Mia moglie è morta e, subito dopo, mio padre e mia nonna anche. Poco dopo ho avuto una fidanzata morta in macchina a causa del monossido di carbonio: morte per suicidio. Poi nel 2003 sono stato male a causa di disturbi intestinali. Orribile. Sono stato all’Inferno per alcuni anni. Sono stato vicino alla morte due volte, dopo sei operazioni chirurgiche.
Ho avuto abbastanza tempo per pensare alla mia vita e a cosa fosse importante per me se avessi avuto una nuova occasione di vivere: fare musica e ricominciare con la mia creatura, i Paradox. Nel 2006 abbiamo suonato il nostro primo show dopo cinque anni al Keep It True Festival in Germania, dopo ho scritto le nuove canzoni per il nostro disco del 2008, “Electrify”.

3) Credo che “Riot Squad” sia un album che, nell’ambito del thrash metal, ha spazzato via la maggior parte dei nomi storici e non che hanno pubblicato i loro rispettivi album più o meno nello stesso periodo del vostro. Gli unici che mi hanno davvero stupito sono stati i Laaz Rockit con “Left For Dead”, ma il resto l’ho trovato di una noia mortale. Come mai, secondo te allora, la gente continua a supportare sempre gli stessi nomi (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth ecc), mentre gente come voi meriterebbe ben altra attenzione?

Assolutamente sì! Non so perché, è un fenomeno. Forse stanno aspettando per un nuovo “Reign In Blood”, “Master Of Puppets” o “Peace Sells”, ma è soltanto un sogno. Penso che i media possano fare più soldi con loro, non corrono rischi con queste grandi band. L’underground ha bisogno di più supporto, perché questo è la base della nostra musica.

4) Di recente ho letto un comunicato su myspace tramite il quale vi lamentavate della scarsa attività live dei Paradox, imputando tale situazione a dei promoters che quasi ignorano la vostra esistenza…Come è possibile che delle band che non hanno né le qualità né una storia come la vostra vengano prese più in considerazione dagli organizzatori di concerti rispetto a voi?

Sono molto deluso per questo problema, ma non siamo da soli, anche altre band degli anni ‘80 hanno questo problema. Noi non siamo abbastanza grandi per loro o troppo vecchi ahahah! Abbiamo aspettato molto tempo per avere l’opportunità di suonare nei più grandi festival come il Wacken o il Bang Your Head, ma se non fai parte della famiglia degli organizzatori non hai molte possibilità.
Alcune band hanno suonato cinque volte al Wacken. E’ uno schifo (in realtà l’espressione che Charly ha usato è “That sucks”, nda). Beh, proveremo a sorprendere con buona musica nel futuro per avere forse un’opportunità.

5) Il songwriting di “Riot Squad” come al solito è stato svolto da te, così come molti altri aspetti della sua realizzazione come la produzione. Nonostante sia tu a farti carico della maggior parte del lavoro, la qualità di questo disco, e non solo questo, è stupefacente per freschezza, tecnica e ispirazione. Dove trovi tanta creatività e cosa ti spinge, dopo 25 anni di carriera, ad andare avanti con questa determinazione?

La passione è la chiave. Da quando sono un bambino ascolto heavy metal. Ho iniziato nel 1970 con “Paranoid” dei Black Sabbath, quindi ho vissuto questa musica, me la sono goduta ogni giorno. Per questo sono sempre stato motivato nello scrivere nuove canzoni.

6) Cosa rappresenta la copertina di “Riot Squad”? C’è una specie di simbolo con all’interno la stessa figura dell’uomo-macchina raffigurato nel precedente “Electrify”. Vuoi parlarci anche di cosa trattano i testi dei Paradox e in particolare quelli dell’ultimo album?

Noi lo chiamiamo “il ragazzo calvo”. E’ come una mascotte della nuova generazione dei Paradox. Qui ci sono alcune spiegazioni delle canzoni di “Electrify” e “Riot Squad”…

“Hollow Peace”: la guerra ha bisogno di una scusa, di solito è la pace. Questa situazione ha aiutato nel tempo, dove i temi religiosi e le guerre non funzionano più bene (nel mondo Occidentale), ma l’industria militare ha bisogno di argomenti per sopravvivere…

“No Place To Survive”: coloro che non sono “mainstream” sono dei perdenti per la società.

“Nothingness”: alcuni pensieri filosofici, orientati sulla “teoria del Nulla” (non l’ho capita fino in fondo) – solo alcuni pensieri sulla possibilità del Nulla come inizio di tutto – un uomo trova difficile percepire “il nulla” come “l’eternità”…

“Placet Terror”: viviamo su un Pianeta del terrore. Lo vediamo tutti i giorni nei TG. Questa è una canzone anti-terrore.

“Second Over Third By Force”: il titolo è ovviamente un gioco di parole, dove abbiamo messo “Force” invece di “Fourth”. Il secondo è più forte del terzo, ma ha comunque bisogno del quarto per essere forte, per avere forza. E’ un’allusione alla insensatezza dei “giochi di potere” delle nostre vite: ognuno di noi vuole essere migliore e più forte dell’altro, o addirittura il leader, il “primo”. Il leader, a sua volta, cerca di tenere tutto sotto il suo controllo per ottenere il suo potere. Nel farlo, usa l’odio, l’invidia e la paura.

“Infected”: questa parla del ragazzo sulla copertina del disco (Electrify, nds), che è collegato ad un computer, come il ragazzo ne “Il Tagliaerbe” (Stephen King). Improvvisamente si rende conto che c’è qualcosa che non va in lui. E’ infetto da un virus, che si sta prendendo il suo cervello e le sue funzioni vitali, e infine distrugge l’essere umano.

7) Qual è stata la risposta della stampa specializzata e del pubblico per “Riot Squad”?

“Riot Squad” ha guadagnato travolgenti recensioni in tutto il mondo, voti alti in Germania, Giappone, e molti paesi europei. Questo album ci ha aiutato molto ad incrementare la nostra fan-base. Abbiamo anche reso felici i nostri vecchi fan con un paio di canzoni veloci come “No Place To Survive” e “Psychofficial”.

8) Vorrei azzardare un paragone, premettendo però che reputo i Paradox una realtà con una grandissima personalità. In breve penso che voi siate la risposta più credibile e riuscita a coloro che hanno smesso di ascoltare i Metallica dopo “…And Justice For All”. Pur essendo diversi da loro per vari aspetti, soprattutto in “Collision Course” e in parte anche sugli ultimi 2 vostri dischi, ascoltandoli ho la sensazione che chi ha amato quei Metallica, quelli fino al 1988 non può fare a meno di amare anche voi. Sei d’accordo con questo? Cosa pensi della carriera dei Metallica dal “Black Album” in poi, e cosa pensi del loro ultimo “Death Magnetic”?

I Paradox sono influenzati soprattutto dalla scena della Bay Area degli inizi, con band come Metallica, Exodus, Legacy (Testament). Anche dai thrashers della scena melodica Flotsam & Jetsam di Phoenix, ma abbiamo trovato il nostro stile tipico. Io lo chiamo “power speed” con elementi thrash. Se mi ascoltate cantare riconoscereste i Paradox. Penso ci sia abbastanza spazio per ascoltare entrambe le band.

Sui Metallica: sono stato un loro grande fan fino ad “…And Justice For All”, “Death Magnetic” è il loro miglior album dopo venti anni, ma non buono come i primi quattro album. Hanno cercato di ritornare alle loro radici, ma sento che gli manca la loro passione. Oggi preferisco i Megadeth, Dave e Chris sono dei “killer guitarists”. Kirk Hammet non riesce a suonare assoli senza wha wha, ed è miglia distante da Dave Mustaine. Lars è un batterista di valore, ha il suo stile proprio ma non è un batterista molto professionale. Solo James e Rob sono buono musicisti. I Metallica hanno scritto buone canzoni, questa è la cosa più importante.

9) Molti gruppi thrash del passato ultimamente si sono riuniti (Heathen, Laaz Rockit, Defiance, Death Angel, ecc) e molti altri giovani gruppi sembra che vogliano ritornare a suonare thrash metal come negli anni 80. Cosa pensi di questo revival? Credi sia solo una moda passeggera o pensi sia un fenomeno duraturo? Ci sono dei gruppi che ti hanno colpito particolarmente in questi ultimi anni?

Il thrash metal non morirà mai. Molte persone che nel passato hanno detto che questo genere di metal era morto…Non è vero. Mi piacciono alcune bands della “New Wave of Tharsh”, come gli Evile, ma non ho sentito nuovi Forbidden, Metallica, Heathen, Testament, o Exodus. Molte band con un profilo basso ottengono contratti, il mercato è pieno di questi gruppi. Inoltre non mi piace la maggior parte dei cantanti delle nuove thrash bands. Non riescono a cantare, urlano soltanto senza talento, si assomigliano tutti l’un l’altro, è noioso. Non faccio nomi, ascoltate e capirete ciò che voglio dire. Alcuni di loro sono spinti dai media, ma non sopravviveranno, perché i fans decidono su un periodo più lungo di tempo ciò che gli piace oppure no.

10) Cosa ti ricordi degli inizi della vostra band e cosa pensi sia cambiato nel mondo del metal dagli anni 80 ad oggi? Era meglio prima o adesso?

Il supporto dei fan è grande come negli anni ’80. I fans heavy metal sono i più leali al mondo, niente è cambiato, forse sono un po’ più aperti verso altri strumenti o stili “crossover”. Oggi puoi usare una cornamusa nel metal, negli anni ’80 venivi considerato una poser-band se usavi qualche suono di tastiera. Ma la musica era più costante negli anni ’80, molti più grandi album in fila e nessun fake, nessun trucco e più registrazioni reali. Al giorno d’oggi c’è molta bassa qualità.

11) Puoi dirci qualcosa riguardo gli ultimi cambi di line-up nei Paradox. Attualmente siete stabili in questo senso?

Dopo venti anni di appartenenza ci ha lasciato Kai Pasemann, ma siamo ancora amici e lui continuerà a scrivere i testi per i Paradox. Non aveva più abbastanza tempo per noi a causa del suo lavoro di avvocato.
Ora abbiamo trovato Gus Drax (suona anche nei Biomechanical). E’ un ragazzo veramente molto professionale, per me uno dei migliori solo-guitarist della scena. Arriva da Larisa, in Grecia.
Tutti gli altri membri Olly Keller (basso) e Roiland Jahoda (batteria) sono ancora a bordo. Detesto i cambiamenti in line-up, ma a volte non si ha altra scelta. Spero che possiamo rimanere assieme il più a lungo possibile ed essere stabili.

12) Quali sono i piani futuri dei Paradox? Avete già iniziato a comporre qualcosa per il prossimo album?

Ho cominciato il processo di songwriting la scorsa settimana. Al momento sto lavorando su una canzone intitolata “Pit Of Despire”. E’ un tipico pezzo thrash dei Paradox, suona come se si incontrassero “Collision Corse” e “Riot Squad”. Il prossimo album uscire ancora per AFM Records.

13) Ok, l’intervista è finita, concludi come vuoi!

Spero di poter tornare in Italia a dicembre. Ho sentito di un tour con gli Helstar (mamma mia!, nda). Siamo impazienti di venire in Italia perché ci accogliete molto bene! Grazie per il supporto fratelli. Vi ringrazierò con della buona musica!

1) Hello Charly, for me it is an honor to have you on our webzine! Let's start talking about your latest album, "Riot Squad". In my review I gave a very high rate (85/100), and I think it is the absolute best thrash album released in 2009, and in my opinion for many years now. Do you think I exaggerate when I call it as your best album of all time?

At first thanx for all this compliments. We´re very happy with our current album "RIOT SQUAD". Together with "HERSY" and "COLLISION COURSE" it`s my favourite PARADOX record. The production goes more "in face" and the songs kicks more ass. So i agree with you! We are on the right way. No PARADX fan will be disappointed.

2) I know that after "Collision Course" (2000), Paradox had to be stopped for many years before returning with "Electrify" (2008). Do you want to talk about the reasons for this long break? I know that unfortunately you had to fight several health and personal problems. Am I right?

Yes you are! I had a lot of personal dramas in that time. My wife died and short after my father and grandmother. Later on i had a girl friend who dies in a car by carbon monoxide. Death by suicide.

Then in 2003 i was getting sick by intestinal desease. horrible. i was been in hell for a few year. two times i was closes to die after 6 surgerys. i had enough time to think about my life and what is important for me if i get a new chance to live. Makin music and starting a new comeback with my baby PARADOX.

In 2006 we played our first show after 5 years at the "Keep-It-True"-Festival here in Germany. After i wrote new songs for our 2008 release "ELECTRIFY".

3) I think "Riot Squad" is an album that, in the thrash metal scene, has wiped out most of the historic names and other bands who have published their respective albums more or less in the same time as yours. The only band that really amazed me were Laaz Rockit with "Left For Dead", but the rest I found it a bore. Why, in your opinion people continue to support always the same names (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth etc.), while people like you will deserve a very different focus?

Hell yes! I don´t know why. It´s a phenomen. May they´ are waiting for a new "Reign In Blood", "Master Of Puppets" or "Peace Sells..." album from them, but that is just a dream. I think the media can make more money with them. They have no risk with that biggest bands. The underground needs more support, cause this is the base of our music.

4) I recently read a statement on your myspace by which you complain about the lack of live activity of Paradox, attributing the situation to the promoters that almost ignore your existence ... How can bands that neither have the quality and the history of you be considered more by live promoters than you?

I´m very disappointed about that problem, but we are not alone. Also other Bands from the 80`s have this problem. We are not big enough for them or too old haha. We are waiting such a long time to get a chance for a bigger festival like Wacken or Bang Your Head, but if you are not a part of the booker family you have not much chances. Some bands playd five times at Wacken. That sucks. Well, we try to surprise with good music in the future to get maybe a chance later on.

5) The songwriting of "Riot Squad", as usual, was done by you, as well as many other aspects of its realization as the mixing. Even if you do all the work, the quality of this disc, and not only this, is incredibly fresh, technical and inspired. Where do you find so much creativity and what makes you, after 25 years of career, go forward with this determination?

Passion is the key. Since i was beeing a child i`ve listened to heavy metal. It starts up in 1970 with Black Sabbath`s "Paranoid". So i live this music. I enjoy it every day. That´s why i`m always beeing motivated in writing new songs.

6) What is represented on the cover of "Riot Squad"? There is a kind of symbol with the same human-machine figure shown in previous "Electrify". Do you want to talk about the texts of Paradox, and in particular the one of the last album?

We call him "bald guy". It´s like a maskot in the new generation of PARADOX. Here a few explanations of ELECTRIFY and RIOT SQUAD songs...

"Hollow Peace"

The war needs an excuse. Mostly its peace. This argument helped in the times, where religious arguments and wars are no good anymore (in the western world), but the military industry needs arguments to survive….

"No Place To Survive"

Those who are not mainstream are the loosers of society

"Nothingness"

Some philosophical thoughts, orientated on the “nothingness theorie“ (I didn´t really understand)- just some thoughts about the possibility of nothing as the beginning of all being – a human finds it hard to really understand “nothing” just as hard as “eternity”….

"Planet Terror"

We are living on a planet of terror. you see that every day in the TVnews. This an Anti Terror Song.

"Second Over Third By Force"

The title is obviously a word-play, where we put “force” instead of “fourth”. The second is stronger than the third, but still he needs the fourth to be strong, to have force – ist an allusion to the senseless power-plays in our lives: everyone wants to be better and stronger than the other or than the leader, the “first”. The leader again is trying to keep everything in its place an obtain his power. In trying to do this, he uses hate, envy and fear.

"Infected"

This one´s about the guy on the cover who is connected to a computer-system, like the guy in lawnmower-man (Steven King). He suddenly realises, that something is wrong with him. He´s infected by a virus, that is taking over his brain and his bodyfunctions, and finally destroying the human being.

7) How were the responses by the audience and the press for "Riot Squad"? Do you think you have increased your fan base?

RIOT SQUAD earned overwhelming reviews all over the world. Highest rankings in Germany, Japan and many countrys in Europe. This album helps as a lot to increase our fanbase. Also we made our older fans lucky with a couple of fast songs like "No Place To Survive" or the Tempo 300 track "Psychofficial"

8) I would hazard a comparison, first I want to say that I think that Paradox are a reality with a great personality. In short I think that you are the most credible and successful response to those who have stopped listening to Metallica after ... “And Justice For All”. Although different from them in several aspects, especially in "Collision Course" and partly on your last 2 records, listening to them I feel that those who loved Metallica until 1988 cannot love you too. Do you agree with this? What do you think of Metallica's career from the "Black Album" on, and what do you think of their latest "Death Magnetic"?

PARADOX is most influenced by the early Bay-Area scene with bands like Metallica, Exodus, Legacy (Testament). Also by Phoenix melodic thrashers Flotsam & Jetsam but we found our own typical style.

I call it "Powerspeed" with Thrash Elements. If you here me singing you know it´s PARADOX. I think there is enough place to listen to both bands. About Metallica. I was been a big fan til "..And Justice For All". "Death Magnetic" is the best album since 20 years, but not as good as the first 4 albums. They try to comeback to their roots, but i miss their passion. Nowadays i prefer Megadeth. Dave and Chris are killerguitarists. Kirk Hammet can´t play solos without a "WahWah and he is miles away from Dave Mustaine.

Lars is a timing killer. He has his own style, but he isn´t a very professional drummer Just James and Rob are good musicians. Metallica wrote good songs. The most important thing.

9) Many thrash bands of the past have recently met (Heathen, Laaz Rockit, Defiance, Death Angel, etc.) and many other young bands seem to want to return to play thrash metal like 80’s. What do you think of this revival? Do you think it is just a trend or do you think is a long lasting situation? There are groups that have particularly impressed you in recent years?

Thrash Metal never dies. Many people who said inb the past this kind of metal is dead...it isn´t.

It grows I like some few bands from the "New Wave Of Thrash" like "Evile but I hear no new Forbidden, Metallica, Heathen, Testament, or Exodus. Too many bands with a low standart gets signed. The market is full of this bands. I also don´t like the most singers of the new Thrash bands. They cannot sing. They only shout without talent. Everyone sounds like the otherone. That´s boring. i don´t say any names. Just listen and you know what i mean. Some of them gets pushed by media, but they will not alive, cause the fan decide in a longer period of time whats good for him or not

10) What do you remember of the beginning of your band and what do you think has changed in the world of metal from the 80’s to today? It was better before or now?

Fanwise it is as good as in the 80`s. Heavy Metal fans are the most loyal fans in the world. Nothing has changed. Maybe they are a bit more open for other instruments or crossover styles. today you can use a bagpipe in metal. in the 80´s you was been a poserband if you used any keyboardsounds.

BUT

The music and was more constant in the 80`s. More great albums in row and no fakes, no programmings. more real recordings. Nowadays we have too much low quality.

11) Can you tell us something about the last line-up in Paradox. Currently are you stable in this sense?

Well, after his 20 years membershift we past ways with KAI PASEMANN, but we´re still friends and he will continue writing the lyrics for PARADOX. He hasn´t enough time anymore for us, caused by his job as a lawyer. Now we found GUS DRAX (he is also in BIOMECHANICAL). He is a very professional thinking young man. For me one of the best new solo guitarists in the scene. He comes from Larisa, Greece.

All other members OLLY KELLER (bass) and ROILAND JAHODA (drums) are still on board.

I hate line-up changings but sometimes you have no other choice. I hope we can stay together for a long time and be stable.

12) What are the future plans of Paradox? Have you already begin to compose something for the next album?

I´ve started the songwriting process last week. At the moment i work on a song called Pit Of Despair. It´s a typical Paradox Thrasher. It sounds like COLLISION COURSE meets RIOT SQUAD.

The next album will be released again via AFM-Records
